Arab racism must go

There will be no peace around here before Arabs view Jews as human beings

Jackie Levy Published: 12.03.07,
Despite all the ceremonial declarations uttered in Annapolis, my attention was drawn to a small story about the organizers tasked with planning the seating arrangements. As those were peace talks, and as all of us want peace, the organizers were warned about the need to ensure that no Syrian or Saudi official unintentionally encounters some Zionist pest.

This was indeed a large venue, but still, people (just like monkeys) sometimes have to go to the bathroom or wash their hands. In short, they may have to pass through a narrow corridor where, you never know, you may encounter one of those – well, here the speaker is supposed to venomously utter the word: “Zionist.”
Syria’s motives for attending the conference were quite clear. They came to score points and extricate themselves, as much as is possible, out of the axis of evil. In short, they came because of Syrian issues – all the rest didn’t quite interest them, and it was not easy for them as it is. But to bump into an Israeli?! A Jew! Face to face, with no Condoleezza or a sea of officials around. Just you and I. Now that’s way too much, being forced to exchange glances or even mumble something. This is where we draw the line.
After all, Arabs are honorable people, and the Israelis, on top of all the other trouble, have this bad habit of using such incidents in order to suddenly show friendliness, utter some kind of silly joke, and then tell everyone about it. Years after Annapolis, some Israeli minister or advisor could write in his memoirs how he made a quick comment to the Syrian official about the crappy American coffee, and yes, he thinks he saw a hint of a smile on the Syrian’s face – for a moment there, the Israeli will say, we were able to overcome the raging conflict and just be two men, Khaled and I, yearning for some good coffee.

The end of the story is that it was not easy at all to arrange the chairs. Sophisticated algorithms were utilized and multifaceted maneuvers previously only known in Astronomy were used, so that under no circumstances would an Arab and a Jew come in contact or some share kind of proximity that could hurt the feelings of the nation.

Our enemies are racist
Simply put, our enemies, among other things, are quite racist. As opposed to some stigmas, it turns out that arrogance is not an Israeli monopoly. It’s amazing how the Arab world managed to convince the West that the racist hatred is merely legitimate religious sensitivity that must be taken into consideration.
We should also take a moment to consider the fact that for us these things always sound like a silly joke. We treat it the same way we ridicule the Arab refusal to compete against Israeli athletes. None of us, with the exception of the margins of the far Right, have a problem meeting an Arab, shaking his hand, or showing sympathy for him.
The thing is, on their side it’s an absolutely serious matter. It’s hard to believe that anyone in the Arab media was joking about the seating arrangements.

For years we’ve been reprimanding ourselves over our attitude to Arabs and our racist jokes. Yet while we were busy reprimanding, we almost failed to notice that something changed around here. When was the last time you heard a derogatory term like “towel head” being used seriously, without any sarcasm? When was the last time an Israeli film featured an Arab character that was less than divine?
Meanwhile, the exact opposite is happening on the other side. And no, we’re not talking about a minor issue. Even if all the roadblocks will be removed, there will be no peace around here as long as Muslim Arabs don’t view Jews as human beings.

1) A Summit based on Arabist false language. 2) Is Israel’s survival on the table?

November 28, 2007

1) A Summit based on Arabist false language. 2) Is Israel’s survival on the table?

Re: ILLEGAL Arab “Palestinians” have semantics

Let’s see, those Arab immigrants grandchildren, the so called “Palestinians”, don’t really pay much for their parents/grandparents, and their own crimes of initiating attacks on little Israel with a clear attempt of annihilation (What “occupation”? what was their plan in 1929, 1948, and all those years priort to 1967? and why are most attacks on innocent unarmed Israelis in: Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Netanya, Haifa, etc.?) So basically, they are back at square one, when the ILLEGAL Arab “Palestinians” refused the UN offer of a two states solution.

Now they have all the “moral” language all of a sudden? They can sing all day ñlong the fake excuse for the so called “occupation”, and Israel can’t even cry for it’s survival from Islamic Arab racist terrorism and genocide plans?

PA Objects to Use of ‘Terrorism’ in Draft Document – News Briefs …(IsraelNN.com) Gaps between the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Israel on a joint statement before the Annapolis conference next week include PA objections … http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/Flash.aspx/136905

Notice this summit, it is all about what the Arabs demand, Arabs were always so good in exploiting kind Israelis’ urgent desire for peace, What else will the Israeli GIVERS not stop at???

Foreign policy – But we were told that the Arabs hate us because of supposedly being biased against Arab “Palestinians”… – Propagandists’ “Palestinian” card, How much is it really worth?

November 26, 2007

But we were told that the Arabs hate us because of supposedly being biased against Arab “Palestinians”…

Nov/2007
REMEMBER?

Wild Arabist writers/”activists” have been flooding us for years with brainwashing nonsense as if the Arab Muslim world is “enraged” mainly by the “Palestinian” Israeli conflict.

If only… — this is what they have been selling us for so many years — if only we’d be on the side of the “palestinian” Arabs, all would be singing kumbaya, the “peace loving” Arab world would just come rushing to embrace us.
LIARS!

Never mind the blatant daring hypocrisy of that Arab world, that never really cared about the Arab “Palestinian” brothers, on the contrary, it never allowed any improvement in their status, for fear of losing that anti-west card, (shoved at the westerners ever so often) of: “look at the poor ‘Palestinians'”.

The Arab nations keep the ‘Palestinians’ and their descendants in squalor. They are denied citizenship rights. They are denied work. They are denied property. They are denied their human rights because they are and always will be a political football in the Arab campaign against Israel.
http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=36412

The same vicious historic crimes, the Arab world leaders have been committing with this group of Arabs who call themselves (recently as) “Palestinians”, as in 1948, chasing them out with bragging promises of [ethnic cleansing and genocide] “throwing all the Jews into the sea”.

Even Jew haters “aryans-supremacists” have jumped the bashing-Israel wagon, oh no, not that they ever like the Arab BROWN “inferior” people, of course not! they’d like to get “rid” of them… as soon as possible, But for the time being, it can be used against the people they are so bitter jealous and hate so blindly, the Jews.
NOW WHAT?

So the US has already helped in Israel’s giving away Gaza to the Arab “Palestinians” [2005], an enormous sacrifice, uprooting entire families, communities, exposing and diminishing the little borderline with an enemy that is bent on eliminating Israel 24/7, when the only thing Israel got back is more support among their mainstream for Hamas type of advocating Genocide, still militants firing rockets into Israeli residential homes, still attempts of ‘genocide bombings’.
Where do Arabs stand in its anti-west, as well as in its use of the “Palestinian” propaganda card? Is it the same, better or worse?

So Israel has released hundreds of dangerous “Palestinian” terrorists, out of good will, how do “Palestinians” react? More demands, Qassam missiles aimed at Israeli kindergartens are still on, why not?
Where do Arabs stand in its anti-west, as well as in its use of the ‘Palestinian’ propaganda card? Is it the same, better or worse?

Annapolis 2007: President George W. Bush and Sec. Condoleeza Rice are pushing hard on Israel to give even more to Arabs that never manage to make one iota of investing in peace, not even reducing its media’s demon-ization of Israel.
Where do Arabs stand in its anti-west, as well as in its use of the ‘Palestinian’ propaganda card? Is it the same, better or worse?

IDF Concerned Hamas May Detonate Tunnels to Derail Summit
http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/124358

And what if… Bush succeeds in a big historic push for Arab “Palestinians” sake/favor (a group of people that never wanted to be improved, that has chosen death cult over life at any given opportunity by kind Israelis)? But we were told that the Arabs hate us because of supposedly being biased against Arab “Palestinians”…

Try this:
How many Arabists will welcome any improvement in relations among Arabs & Israel?
OK, ENOUGH OF THE NONSENSE FOR SO LONG, NOW, TO THE PROBLEM/S

But don’t bet on Arabists ever to bother using real logical questions, the REAL ISSUES to be brought up, like, Are the Arabs, Muslims ready yet for democracy & free societies, have tnheir mainstream education in mosques & madsassas really strat to change? Is all of their media began to be less hateful of the “other”?

As you won’t expect any true points, matters that matter to be discussed, as they don’t sit well with their propaganda.

Even though it will answer all above points, plus: Iraq war, Lebanon, and other Arab on Arab, Muslim on Muslim violence.

THE BUTCHER YASSER ARAFAT’S LEGACY

November 12, 2007

THE BUTCHER YASSER ARAFAT’S LEGACY

Yasser Arafat!

  • The one who continued the tradition of hatred of his uncle the infamous Mufti.
  • The Champion of ‘Arab racism & Islamic Jihad’ the two real motives behind anti Israel bigotry.
  • The ‘founder’ of the ‘human bombs factories’.
  • The forthrunner in ‘Palestinian’ self made misery, self destruction [ecause ‘anti Israelism is more important than self advancement’?].
  • The arch butcher of Jews & Lebanese Christians masquerading as a “freedom fighter”.
  • The “father” of most evil “parenthood” in indoctrinating Arab children into the death cult of “palestine”.
  • The champion in ‘how to make sure Arab kids die and blame it on the Zionists’ [Human bombs, Human shields or the simple ‘Muhammad Al Dura’ model of killing own children and pin it on Israel].
  • The persecutor of non Muslims, as in Islamization and ISLAMIC APARTHEID.
  • As in the merciless thief stealing from his own poor people.
  • The icon of a foreign Arab immigrant [born in Egypt] settler going under a “native” – typical of most of this Arab Muslim group that calls itself in the last 30-40 years as “palestinians”.

Arafat’s Tomb and Legacy

By David Bedein
FrontPageMagazine.com | Friday, November 09, 2007 This Sunday, November 11th, 2007, after three years of planning and construction in the courtyard of Yasser Arafat’s “mukataa” headquarters in Ramallah, a mausoleum in memory of the Godfather of Terror will be inaugurated with a full military ceremony. It will launch the memorial day to mark the three years since his death.Machmud Abbas, a.ka. Abu Mazen, Arafat’s protégé and successor, will cut the ribbon, followed by the entire Palestinian and Fatah leadership that will enter the mausoleum. Also invited to the ceremony are ambassadors, diplomatic representatives and heads of international organizations. After the visit to the tomb, a prayer session will be held at a new mosque built next to the mausoleum.Arafat’s tomb is located within a huge spacious oblong building in the form of the Qaba at Mecca, painted white. On the building are inscribed quotations from the Koran.Having covered Arafat for more than a decade, I am often asked what was it like to cover Arafat and to speak with him.Indeed, the news agency that I work with in Jerusalem had become known as the “Arafat tape” agency, because of our editing and distribution of Arafat’s numerous appearances on the official media of the PBC, the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation TV, which belied any true hint of peace. These videos were also shown in Congress. In November 1996, on the day that coincided with Thanksgiving eve in the US, this reporter covered a delegation of 10 Israeli residents from Judea and Samaria who met with Yasser Arafat at his domicile in Bethlehem. To summarize the purpose of the meeting in two words, one participant described it as “reality testing.” Arafat had maintained a consistent policy of saying one thing in English, advocating peace and co-existence, while conveying quite another message in Arabic, as he continued to incite the Palestinian Arab people to war with the Jewish state. Arafat had yet to deliver even one message that calls for peace with the state of Israel in the Arabic language. What the delegation wanted to know was with whom they were dealing: a neighbor of peace or an antagonist at war? This unofficial “settler delegation” asked Arafat very specific and pointed questions as to whether he would indeed embark on a policy of peace or war.The idea was to look to the future, not to the past. Would Arafat finally make a speech in Arabic in which he would call for peace with the state of Israel? Would the PBC “Voice of Palestine” Radio, which was under the direct control of Arafat, stop its invective against Israelis, especially against the Israeli residents of Judea and Samaria (The West Bank)? Would Arafat encourage teachers and other officials of the Palestine Authority to participate in programs that encourage tolerance and co-existence?Arafat was all smiles throughout our two-hour sessions delivering long-winded speeches in which he professed to be a man of tolerance and understanding, well deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.I then asked Arafat a pointed question: Would he get on the airwaves of the Voice of Palestine and proclaim reconciliation with Israel in the Arabic language to his own people, and would Arafat denounce any and all murders of Jews on that same station, if future murders occur. Arafat nodded his head and said that he “speaks about peace all the time”, to which I responded that we have no such record. “You will see,” Arafat said and finished the meeting in a cordial manner. What the participants thought and felt after the meeting was that Arafat would deliver his answer through actions, not with words.Arafat’s “answer” was not long in coming. Exactly two weeks later, on the seventh night of Chanukah, a dimly lit drizzly evening near the Israeli community of Beit El, three Palestinians shot up the car of the Tzur family of Beit El, killing a mother and child in the car. The killers’ smoldering vehicle was found in one of the “safe havens” of the Palestinian Authority.

We called Arafat after the attack. So did all major media. He was nowhere to be found.

However, the next morning, Arafat’s PBC radio newsreel broadcast that an “incident occurred on the settler road” where “two criminal settlers were killed.”

The next day, our news agency dispatched a TV crew to Gaza to give Arafat the direct opportunity to say something about the attack. We had the opportunity to see Arafat once more.

Smiling widely again, Arafat greeted reporters and waved away the question about the murders in Beit El. A few hours later, Arafat then issued a public order that if the killers at Bait El are caught, they would not be turned over.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority confirmed that 10 recent killers of Israeli civilians had been hired as officers in the Palestinian Liberation Army police force.

Arafat had delivered his answer loud and clear to the delegation that came to see him.

In the topsy-turvy Orwellian world in which we live, Yasser Arafat, the leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, defined under Israeli law as a terrorist organization, was a Nobel Peace Laureate, while Israeli residents of Judea, Samaria and Katif (in Gaza) are often thought of portrayed as warmongers.

And when Arafat made his first visit to the UN in 1974, the PLO leader grasped an olive branch in one hand and a pistol in the other.

Epilogue One: Two years later, on December 1st, 1998, Arafat appeared at a US State Department briefing that I covered. US Secretary of State Madelyn Albright gave me the opportunity to ask a question of Arafat. I asked Arafat if he would stand by the commitment to preach reconciliation in the Arabic language that he had given two years before, and I presented Arafat with the records of his speeches from the previous few weeks, in which, among other things, Arafat had called the Jews “the Sons of Satan.”

Arafat’s response was to foam from the mouth and pound on the State Department platform and scream that “I love the Jews, I love the Jews!

Epilogue Two: As the United Jewish Communities meets in its annual General Assembly of Jewish Federations this Sunday in Nashville, Tennessee on the day that marks three years since Yasser Arafat’s death, it should be recalled that in October 1999, the same United Jewish Communities (UJC), almost awarded Arafat the Isaiah Peace Prize.

After I was provided with written documentation of the prize, and after I published in the Jewish Advocate in Boston and the Forward in New York, the UJC peace prize to Arafat was cancelled, with no explanation as to why such an award was offered by a Jewish group to Arafat and as to why it was cancelled. What the UJC did, however, was to hire Kroll Associates, a private investigation firm, to determine how the news of this prize was leaked to this reporter. They never found out.

Learn the full story about the UJC/Isaiah Award for Peace that was to go to Arafat to appreciate where we are today.

The following is from CAMERA written in 2004:

November 13, 2004

Members of the media are focusing much attention on Yasir Arafat’s legacy. Many of the historical briefs and timelines being published whitewash his decades-long involvement in terrorism. While they note that Arafat led Fatah and the PLO, the terrorist acts committed by these groups are often ignored.

For example, a Nov. 4 AP timeline, reproduced in the publications and Web sites of many different media outlets, lists only one failed act of sabotage in 1965, 3 suicide bombings in December of 2001 and one in 2002.

In fact, groups under Arafat’s direct or indirect command – including Fatah, Black September, Tanzim and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade – were responsible for hundreds of bombings, hijackings, assassinations and other attacks, including the 1972 murder of 11 of Israel’s Olympic athletes in Munich, the 1973 murder of the American ambassador to Sudan, Cleo Noel, and the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruiseship (resulting in the murder of wheelchair-bound Leon Klinghoffer).

The AP timeline instead highlights Israel’s anti-PLO actions without providing the reason – decades of terrorist attacks against innocent civilians. Not only is the PLO’s history of international hijackings, kidnappings and child murders ignored, the terrorist organization and Arafat’s leadership of it are actually praised:

Feb. 4, 1969: Arafat takes over PLO chairmanship, transforms it into a dynamic force that makes Palestinian cause known worldwide.

A Knight-Ridder/Tribune timeline of Arafat’s life that appeared in Newsday only mentions terror once, in 2001: “Blamed for not controlling terrorist attacks on Israel by Hamas, other radicals.” Typical of many of the flawed timelines, it implies only that Arafat failed to control terror, not that he was actively involved in funding and supporting it.

In order to report on Arafat’s history objectively, one must include his decades-long involvement in terror, his goal of destroying Israel, and his siphoning of hundreds of millions of dollars from money donated to help the Palestinian people that went instead into his own private accounts.

Yasir Arafat is known to many as the “father of modern terrorism.” Below is a timeline of some of the key events of his life and terrorist acts with which he was associated. (prepared by www.camera.org)

Key Events in Yasir Arafat’s Terrorist Career

Aug 4, 1929: Born in Cairo. Arafat, then named Muhammad Abdel Rahman Abdel Rauf al-Qudwa al-Husseini, is fifth child of prosperous merchant, Abdel Raouf al-Qudwa al-Husseini.

July 5, 1965: A Fatah cell plants explosives at Mitzpe Massua, near Beit Guvrin; and on the railroad tracks to Jerusalem near Kafr Battir.

1965-1967: Numerous Fatah bomb attacks target Israeli villages, water pipes, railroads. Homes are destroyed and Israelis are killed.

July 1968: Fatah joins and becomes the dominant member of the PLO, an umbrella organization of Palestinian terrorist groups.

Feb. 4, 1969: Arafat is appointed Chairman of the Executive Committee of the PLO

Sept. 6, 1970: TWA, Pan-Am, and BOAC airplanes are hijacked by PLO terrorists.

September 1970: Jordanian forces battle the PLO terrorist organization, driving its members out of Jordan after the group’s violent activity threatens to destabilize the kingdom. The terrorists flee to Lebanon. This period in PLO history is called “Black September.”

May 1972: PFLP, part of the PLO, dispatches members of the Japanese Red Army to attack Lod Airport in Tel Aviv, killing 27 people.

Sept. 5, 1972: Munich Massacre —11 Israeli athletes are murdered at the Munich Olympics by a group calling themselves “Black September,”said to be an arm of Fatah, operating under Arafat’s direct command.

March 1, 1973: Palestinian terrorists take over Saudi embassy in Khartoum. The next day, two Americans –including the United States’ ambassador to Sudan, Cleo Noel – and a Belgian were shot and killed. James J. Welsh, an analyst for the National Security Agency from 1969 through 1974, charged Arafat with direct complicity in these murders.

April 11, 1974: 11 people are killed by Palestinian terrorists who attack apartment building in Kiryat Shmona.

May 15, 1974: PLO terrorists infiltrating from Lebanon hold children hostage in Ma’alot school. 26 people, 21 of them children, are killed.

June 9, 1974: Palestinian National Council adopts “Phased Plan,” which calls for the establishment of a Palestinian state on any territory evacuated by Israel, to be used as a base of operations for destroying the whole of Israel. The PLO reaffirms its rejection of United Nations Security Council Resolution 242, which calls for a “just and lasting peace” and the “right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force.”

November 1974: PLO takes responsibility for the PDFLP’s Beit She’an murders in which 4 Israelis are killed.

Nov. 13, 1974: Arafat, wearing a holster (he had to leave his gun at the entrance), addresses the U.N. General Assembly.

March 1978: Coastal Road Massacre —Fatah terrorists take over a bus on the Haifa-Tel Aviv highway and kill 21 Israelis.

1982: Having created a terrorist mini-state in Lebanon destabilizing that nation, PLO is expelled as a result of Israel’s response to incessant PLO missile attacks against northern Israeli communities. Arafat relocates to Tunis.

Oct. 7, 1985: Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro is hijacked by Palestinian terrorists. Wheelchair-bound elderly man, Leon Klinghoffer, was shot and thrown overboard. Intelligence reports note that instructions originated from Arafat’s headquarters in Tunis.

Dec. 12, 1988: Arafat claims to accept Israel’s right to exist.

September 1993: Arafat shakes hands with Israeli Prime Minister Rabin, inaugurating the Oslo Accords. Arafat pledges to stop incitement and terror, and to foster co-existence with Israel, but fails to comply. Throughout the years of negotiations, aside from passing, token efforts, Arafat does nothing to stop Hamas, PFLP, and Islamic Jihad from carrying out thousands of terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians. With Arafat’s encouragement and financial support, groups directly under Arafat’s command, such as the Tanzim and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, also carry out terror attacks.

Oct. 21, 1996: Speaking at a rally near Bethlehem, Arafat said “We know only one word – jihad. jihad, jihad, jihad. Whoever does not like it can drink from the Dead Sea or from the Sea of Gaza.” (Yediot Ahronot, October 23, 1996)

April 16, 1998: In a statement published in the official Palestinian Authority newspaper Al-Hayat Al-Jadeeda, Arafat is quoted: “O my dear ones on the occupied lands, relatives and friends throughout Palestine and the diaspora, my colleagues in struggle and in arms, my colleagues in struggle and in jihad…Intensify the revolution and the blessed intifada…We must burn the ground under the feet of the invaders.”

July 2000: Arafat rejects peace settlement offered by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, which would have led to a Palestinian state.

September 2000: New “intifada” is launched. Arafat continues to incite, support and fund terrorism.

Jan. 3, 2002: Israelis intercept the Karine-A, a ship loaded with 50 tons of mortars, rocket launchers, anti-tank mines and other weapons intended for the Palestinian war against the Israelis. The captain admits he was under the command of the Palestinian Authority.

Walter Russell Mead : Why Israel never ‘supported’ Iraq war!

Walter Russell Mead : Why Israel never ‘supported’ Iraq war!

Nov. 2007
Walter Russell Mead [author of ‘God & Gold’ – How Anglo-Saxons Chased Gold, Praised God, Stoked `Waspophobia’ (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=a6lK8dtDfiQk) replied to Mike Schneider’s ‘Night Talk’ on bloomberg TV [http://www.bloomberg.com/media/tv/schedule_us.html]

Mike: ‘What do you say to those criticis that say that there are some ties anmong Cheney the neocon and some in the others the ‘Israel lobby’?

Walter: Not true, in fact Israelis & pro Israeli activists always said that Iran is THE threat, during my visits to Israel and being over here, I can tell you, they were actually very worried the entire time letting to and during the war in Iraq, that it might hurt actions pressuring Iran.

As to Cheney couldn’t care less what’s going on in Israel-palestinian front, he was defiined as a lobbyist for the Oil, not anything else.

__________

More on Walter:

Walter Russell Mead on Mearsheimer and Walt, academic freedom, and the Zionist spectre (by Jeff Weintraub)

1. I notice that the latest issue of Foreign Affairs (dated November/December 2007) carries a devastating review of Mearsheimer and Walt’s ‘Israel Lobby’ manifesto by Walter Russell Mead. Mead’s critique is rendered especially devastating by the fact that he bends over backward to give M&W the benefit of the doubt in many ways, accepts that their aims and agenda are entirely well-intentioned (even when such an assessment seems a little strained and implausible), and recognizes when they have tried to address issues that really do need to be addressed (but addressed more intelligently and less tendentiously).

As I have noted in the past (here, for example), many defences of Mearsheimer and Walt’s ‘Israel Lobby’ manifesto, both in their original 2006 article and in the new book-length version, try to shift the ground by reframing M&W’s position in a way that jettisons their most central and incendiary claims and makes their arguments sound more plausible and common-sensical than they actually are. Then, in effect, these writers defend the work that they would have liked to see M&W write – a sober, accurate, intellectually careful, and solidly argued critique of US policies toward Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict – rather than the shoddy, irresponsible, tendentious, and pernicious piece of work that M&W actually wrote. But defences of this sort necessarily involve a certain amount of pretence and prevarication, including attempts to bowdlerize M&W’s arguments and to either ignore or skim over their more outrageous and indefensible claims (for example, blaming the Iraq war on American Jews who support Israel).

Other reviewers have been honest enough to say that they wish that M&W, or someone else, had written the kind of serious critical analysis they wanted to see – but that M&W’s actual manifesto doesn’t fit the bill. (Some early examples were disappointed reviews of the original article by Adam Shatz and Michelle Goldberg back in 2006; a good recent example is the somewhat appalled critique of M&W’s book by the long-time Peace Now activist Leonard Fein.)

Mead’s review has the virtue of addressing M&W’s actual arguments, rather than pretending that they simply consist of a sober critique of AIPAC. (For some other useful critiques, see here.)

2. In addition, Mead has something brief but illuminating to say about a related set of issues.

Lately there has been a lot of foolish talk suggesting that any voices that try to be critical of Israel, or of US policies toward Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict, are stifled or suppressed in American academic and intellectual life. (Some people even try to suggest that this is true in western European countries like Britain, but that notion fails the most basic laugh test.) With respect to the academy in particular, even some normally sensible people seem to have swallowed, or at least half-swallowed, the notion that undue interference by ‘Zionists’ (real or alleged) poses a major threat to academic freedom in the US. What is actually involved, in too many cases, is an effort to discredit or intimidate people who seek to criticize anti-Zionism (that is, the demonization of Israel and its supporters) or anti-Semitism too vigorously.

Like many propaganda campaigns, this one has tended to seize on a few incidents and anecdotes, some legitimately worrisome and others more or less fanciful, and to inflate them out of proportion. These include the denial of tenure to Norman Finkelstein at DePaul University (which may indeed have some genuinely troubling aspects, as Norm and others have pointed out, despite the fact that Finkelstein himself is, in my possibly fallible opinion, an obnoxious, abusive, and poisonous academic charlatan) and the truly idiotic decision by St Thomas University to cancel an appearance by Desmond Tutu for fear he might offend some Jews (a decision that has since been rescinded, not unlike the recent reversal of an even more egregious decision by the administration of Leeds University in Britain to cancel a talk by Matthias Küntzel about the history of anti-Semitism in the Middle East on the grounds that it might offend some Muslims). At the more purely ridiculous end of the spectrum are attempts to pretend that criticisms of M&W are somehow illegitimate and amount to ‘muzzling’ them.

There are certainly a great many real threats to academic freedom and to freedom of expression more generally, in the US and elsewhere. (What else is new? Consider, for example, the perennial campaigns in Britain to institute blacklists of Israeli academics.) Some supporters of Israel undoubtedly do their best to be part of the problem, and when they do they should be criticized and resisted. But to suggest that supporters of Israel are a major source of threats to academic freedom – perhaps even among the most dangerous – is either silly or deliberately tendentious. As Mead points out, to find such a picture plausible requires wilfully ignoring the larger context of ideological cross-pressures in academic and intellectual life.

This artificial anti-Zionist panic also ignores a wider problem that really does pose a threat to academic freedom and to freedom of expression more generally – the growing acceptance of a seductive but unfortunate notion that everyone has a right not to be offended. This point should be obvious, but apparently it isn’t, and Mead makes it quite trenchantly.

One problem is that Mearsheimer and Walt decontextualize the activity of Jews and their allies. Attempts by pro-Zionist students and pressure groups to challenge university decisions to grant tenure or otherwise reward professors deemed too pro-Arab are portrayed as yet another sign of the long reach and dangerous power of the octopus. In fact, these efforts are part of a much broader, and deeply deplorable, trend in American education, by which every ethnic, religious, and sexual group seeks to define the bounds of acceptable discourse. African Americans, Native Americans, feminists, lesbian, gay, and transgendered persons – organizations purporting to represent these groups and many others have done their best to drive speakers, professors, and textbooks with the “wrong” views out of the academy. Zionists have actually come relatively late to this particular pander fest, and they are notable chiefly for their relatively weak performance in the perverse drive to block free speech on campus.

As one illustrative example from DePaul University, Prof. Finkelstein’s former employer, there is the well-known case of Thomas Klocek – who, to quote Wikipedia’s succinct and accurate description, ‘is a former adjunct professor at DePaul University fired for arguing with Muslim and Palestinian students [about Israel] outside the classroom.’ (Of course, some might argue that adjunct faculty ipso facto have no rights to academic freedom. But on the other hand, for those who claim that the real danger of alleged Zionist intimidation is the ‘chilling effect’ it has on free expression in academia and in public discourse more generally, such details should be immaterial… so perhaps those people would like to sign this petition on Klocek’s behalf?)

Another example, having no direct connection to the Arab-Israeli conflict, was the recent successful campaign to rescind Larry Summers‘s invitation to address the UC Regents. Trivial stuff… but just as trivial as the decision by the Polish consulate in NYC to cancel a lecture by Tony Judt. Neither of these gentlemen has exactly been muzzled… though, on the other hand, it is clear in retrospect that Summers’s criticism of extremist anti-Zionists was one of the factors that led him to eventually lose his job as President of Harvard.

Overall, what unites such cases is that, for academic administrators and others, fear of controversy plays a bigger role in decisions of this sort than substantive biases. The response of academics and intellectuals to such reflexes, and to well-meaning ideologies that reinforce them by implying that everyone has a right not to be offended, should be a principled and consistent defence of academic freedom and freedom of expression – not the selective demonization of people who have the temerity to criticize anti-Semitism or anti-Zionism. (Jeff Weintraub)

Hamas, Islamic Jihad & Hezbollah desperately in “need” of CREATING yet another ‘massacre’.

August 16, 2007

Hamas, Islamic Jihad & Hezbollah desperately in “need” of CREATING yet another ‘massacre’.

It seems that the Anti-Israel Islamists see themselves again in the grey routine which they hate, the world sees who they are, that the “struggle” they keep talking about is nothing but senseless violence & attempt of pure genocide.

Boy do they long for the days that the BBC wrote about “killing civilians in Lebanon”, though they all know too well what percentage of real “civilians” were there, they also know their success in getting Arab people in Lebanon killed, after all it was Islamists’ great “heroic” tactics of using the people of Lebanon as convenient shields to shoot out from babies’ rooms their “freedom fighting” arsenal, they are also the first to know about staged “massacres” playing to Reuters cameras, some of which have been already exposed, not to mention the building in Qana that fell only a significant time AFTER Israel returned fire, it’s obvious who is capable in killing own kids in order to make Israel look bad, the same type of “people” that killed Muhammad Al Dura that until exposed served a “good” icon in the Anti-Israel Intifada – Genocide campaign.

No matter the real facts, still they have proven again & again how their scores are high, the MSM falls for their criminal bloody theater – time & time again, and turn the finger on the victim – Israel.

Any wonder now we hear on the news that Hezbullah is eager to cause more Arabs to die?
As anything that will lead to a dead Arab kid is as good a Fatwa as any other “holy” Jihadi act against the infidel.

Hey, BBC, Prepare your articles already, write them — so predictable ahead of time, Why waste time? start bashing the Zionists already before anything happens, as you can’t wait.
